Why Young Professionals Should Join the Engineering/Airside Track

Attending the 2026 AAAE/ACC Airport Planning, Design, & Construction Symposium is a fantastic opportunity for Young Professionals (YPs) to grow their career. There are many events tailored to YPs that provide career guidance, build mentorship connections, and promote networking with industry leaders.

I have the pleasure of working with my colleague, Wilbur Mathurin, as the YP Track Host for the Engineering/Airside Track for the 2026 Symposium. Over the last few months, we have been working diligently to curate five sessions that cover updates and ongoing trends from across the industry. Our goal for this year’s Engineering/Airside Track is to showcase projects that involve a variety of airports, from General Aviation to large commercial service airports, as well as bring in an international focus. I will provide a sneak peek into each session and highlight why YPs should attend.

No Second Option: Creative Construction at Single-Runway Airports

Single-runway airports are particularly sensitive to major construction projects. This session will showcase recent runway reconstruction projects at several airports, and experts will highlight the unique approaches they used to manage phasing and runway closures. YPs should attend to learn the importance of phasing during the design process and the intricacies of working at single-runway airports.

Proving the Concept: Regional General Aviation to Commercial Service from the Ground Up

Our experts will lead a discussion on the hurdles faced when changing status within the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). Notably, this topic will assess alternative funding sources outside of the Airport Improvement Program (AIP) needed to keep projects moving. YPs will learn about the different structures of airports, as well as the funding challenges they face.

Modular Construction: Moving Megastructures Across a Live Airfield

While terminal projects are typically built from the ground up, some structures are better suited for off-site prefabrication and assembly. This approach introduces unique challenges, particularly in transporting the structure to the airport. The panel will explore the benefits of prefabrication and the logistics of moving megastructures across active airfields. YPs will gain knowledge of different project delivery methods, the airspace approval process, and the importance of stakeholder management during construction.

Keeping the World Moving: Overnight Runway Rehabilitation at Busy Airports

When reconstructing runways at the world’s busiest airports, construction crews must race against the clock to have the runway ready before the day’s first flights. This session will feature presentations on recent runway rehabilitation projects that demonstrate the logistical challenges of managing a project of this scale under tight scheduling. YPs will gain insight into design considerations, construction phasing, and strategies for maintaining safety and efficiency during high-stakes airfield projects.

Engineering Hot Topics

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) advisory circulars and design standards are constantly being updated. Our panel will dive into recent changes across the industry as they relate to FAA design criteria, materials, and construction techniques. They will also highlight any upcoming updates to FAA advisory circulars. By attending, YPs will stay up to date on recent industry trends and how to incorporate them into ongoing design projects.

Outside of our sessions, the 2026 Symposium offers many ways for YPs to get involved, including a dedicated YP Program. YP networking event and a scavenger hunt. The YP Program includes networking events and a scavenger hunt. Additionally, finalists from the  Young Professionals Innovation Competition will present their final projects. Attending these events allows YPs to build meaningful industry connections, gain insight from experienced professionals, and strengthen their presence within the field. I encourage all YPs to take full advantage of these opportunities to network, learn, and grow within the aviation community.

We hope to see you in Indianapolis this March!
