Airport Alert: Noem Confirmed as Secretary of DHS
January 25, 2025
In a rare Saturday vote, the Senate confirmed South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as the next Secretary of Homeland Security. After a relatively smooth hearing on January 17, her confirmation vote was bipartisan (59-34), with six Democrats joining Republicans in support of Noem. She is the fourth of President Trump's nominees to be confirmed by the Senate.
Noem is the eighth person to be confirmed as the Secretary of DHS since the department was established in 2002. As Secretary, she will oversee 22 agencies, including the Transportation Security Administration and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. In this position, she will be tasked with tightening border security and enforcing immigration policies, among other activities, as outlined in the President's array of executive orders issued this past week.
