Airport Alert: President-Elect Trump to Nominate Kristi Noem as Secretary of DHS

November 12, 2024

President-elect Donald Trump intends to nominate South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as his next secretary of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), according to CNN, the Wall Street Journal, and other news reports. Noem served in the House of Representatives from 2010-2018. In 2018, she was elected Governor of South Dakota, with the endorsement of President Trump, and was re-elected four years later. Noem is South Dakota's first female governor.

If confirmed by the Senate, Noem will be tasked with overseeing a sprawling DHS that oversees everything from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and the Secret Service. As the DHS Secretary, Noem would be expected to fulfill Trump’s campaign pledges to strengthen border security, crack down on illegal immigration, and try to deport millions of illegal migrants already in the United States, all very costly endeavors.

AAAE is carefully watching the transition to determine how the increased focus on border security and immigration may impact future DHS budgets for critical airport priorities in TSA and CBP officers at airports. As a reminder, it was during the first Trump Administration that TSA began trying to shift more and more of their costs to airports.
