Airport Alert: Nomination of Ali Mayorkas for DHS Secretary Advances for Full Senate Consideration
January 26, 2021
This morning, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee met to consider the nomination of Alejandro (Ali) Mayorkas for the Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security. This business meeting follows a hearing with the nominee on January 19, 2021, which AAAE previously reported on.
Mayorkas was favorably approved by the Committee on a vote of 7 to 4 from those Senators present after serious reservations were raised about the nominee's integrity by Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) in what most likely will be the last hearing he chairs for this Committee as a result of a power sharing agreement reached by Senate leadership. Other Senators, including incoming Chairman Gary Peters (D-MI), called for quick advancement of "this qualified nominee" to the full Senate for consideration because DHS has lacked a confirmed Secretary since April 2019.
