Airport Alert: House Members Seeking Signatures on LEO Reimbursements and Exit Lane Funding Letter - Deadline is Friday, March 13
February 28, 2020
As House Appropriations Committee members begin to consider the fiscal year 2021 funding request for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), senior members of the House Homeland Security Committee are preparing a letter urging the House Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee to reject the Administration's proposal to eliminate funding for TSA's Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) reimbursement grant program and to transfer exit lane staffing responsibilities from TSA to airport operators. We are seeking your help in getting signatures for the letter.
House Transportation and Maritime Security Subcommittee Chairman Lou Correa (D-CA), Ranking Member Debbie Lesko (R-AZ), and Representative Val Demings (D-FL) are seeking co-signers for a letter they intend to send to the House Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee on Friday, March 13, 2020 in support of full funding for both of these programs. The draft letter points to the importance of having strong law enforcement presence in airports, which is critical to deterring, preventing, and responding to attacks. The letter further recognizes that these costs should not be shifted to airports, noting the unbearable burden that would fall to airports without these programmatic resources. A copy of the draft letter is here.
As you will recall, the Administration has proposed to eliminate funding for these two programs for the past three fiscal years (2018-2020). Instead, Congress recognized the importance of these two programs and rejected those budget proposals following strong objections from AAAE and the airport community.
Request: We are urging airports to contact their House members and ask them to co-sign the Correa-Lesko-Demings letter on funding for LEO reimbursements and exit lane staffing. It is critical to communicate with all members of the House of Representatives, not just those on key committees. For a list of all members of the House of Representatives, including contact information, click here.
Interested Members of Congress should contact Aimee.Collins-Mandeville@mail.house.gov with Congresswoman Demings to sign on to the letter and complete this form.
Thank you for your help!
