Airport Alert: SkyWest Provides Notice of Intent to Eliminate Essential Air Service to 29 Communities
March 10, 2022
SkyWest today provided the Department of Transportation with a 90-day notice of intent to terminate Essential Air Service to 29 communities in 15 states. The notice and the list of communities may be viewed here.
AAAE has reached out to DOT about this announcement. It is our understanding that the agency is preparing a so-called 'Hold-In' order that will prohibit SkyWest from terminating EAS to the 29 communities and require the carrier to continue providing service until the agency finds replacement service.
We're told that DOT will also request proposals from air carriers interested in providing EAS to any or all 29 communities. We will share more information on the SkyWest notice and DOT's response when it becomes available.
In other news, the Points Guy reported yesterday that SkyWest intends to change service patterns at 18 of the 49 EAS communities it serves. According to the article, 'the affected cities will now be served in multi-stop itineraries instead of solely with nonstop flights.'
