Airport Alert: Senate Committee Approves Bill Calling for PSAs on Transportation Jobs
March 11, 2020
The Senate Commerce Committee today approved a bill that calls on the Department of Transportation to make public service announcements to highlight job opportunities in the transportation sector. The panel approved the measure by voice vote.
Senator Gary Peters (D-MI) and other lawmakers introduced S. 3303, the Promoting Service in Transportation Act. The bipartisan bill calls for DOT to spend up to $5 million annually through Fiscal Year 2026 on public service announcements to increase awareness of career opportunities for pilots, mechanics, air traffic controllers and other transportation workers.
Although the Commerce Committee approved the measure by voice vote, Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE) spoke out against the legislation. She argued that the bill would set a bad precedent and that the private sector - not the federal government - should pay for the proposed public service announcements.
