Airport Alert: President to Delay REAL ID Deadline
March 23, 2020
At a press conference this afternoon, President Trump announced a delay to the October 1, 2020, REAL ID compliance deadline although he did not specify what the new deadline would be. This reprieve is in response to the coronavirus.
Currently, two-thirds of Americans do not have REAL ID-compliant drivers' licenses. Officials were expecting a surge of people trying to update their identifications before the October 1 deadline. However, with many state department of motor vehicle (DMV) offices closed and the administration asking people to maintain social distancing, the President indicated that he did not want people to go to their local DMVs to try to obtain a REAL ID-compliant drivers license to board a commercial aircraft on October 1, 2020.
As we reported earlier this afternoon, the House Democrats' coronavirus relief package included a provision to move the compliance deadline to not earlier than September 30, 2021, one year later than the current enforcement deadline.
AAAE staff will provide an update when the new deadline is disclosed. President Trump stated, "We will be announcing the new deadline very soon."
