Airport Alert: New REAL ID Media Campaign Material and Request to Extend the Enforcement Deadline

March 31, 2021

In six months, the full REAL ID enforcement deadline will go into effect at all federally regulated airports. Currently, only about 43 percent of Americans either have a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or another acceptable form of identification to board a commercial aircraft.

New Campaign Material:
To promote further awareness of the October 1, 2021 deadline, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has updated its REAL ID campaign materials and today provided AAAE with a new infographic and fact sheet to share with airports. DHS provided this information in advance of the agency updating the dhs.gov/real-id "campaign toolkit" website and it reflects comments received from almost 100 stakeholders last fall. The new campaign material now includes all states' star variations that are used to identify what is a REAL ID-compliant driver's license. Previous infographics just showed a generic star.

Additional campaign material, such as new radio and television ads about the October 1 REAL ID enforcement deadline, will be released in May.

Request to Extend the Enforcement Deadline:
Earlier this month, on March 26, AAAE President and CEO Todd Hauptli requested DHS Secretary Mayorkas extend the October 1, 2021 enforcement deadline until there is a significantly higher saturation of REAL ID-compliant licenses and identification cards so that when fully implemented, the impact on travelers, the Transportation Security Administration, and aviation operations is negligible. The Aviation Security Advisory Committee, on which AAAE serves, also recommended on March 12 that the Department extend the REAL ID deadline.

DHS acknowledged that should the enforcement date change, the Department will make the appropriate creative adjustments to its website, infographic, factsheet, and media campaigns.
