Airport Alert: DOT Announces Small Community Air Service Grants
July 27, 2021
The Department of Transportation today announced that 22 communities in the same number of states will receive grants under the Small Community Air Service Development Program. The grants total approximately $18 million and will help communities with insufficient air service or high air fares.
According to today's announcement, DOT received 78 grant applications from communities in 38 states seeking more than $58 million. The agency pointed out that "this year's eligible applications included proposals for feasibility studies, new or expanded service initiatives, marketing, and assorted combinations thereof."
DOT has previously indicated that individual grants have ranged from $20,000 to almost $1.6 million in recent years. Today's grants ranged from $425,000 for a community to use for marketing "to support an ultra-low cost carrier" and slightly more than $1 million for another community to use for a revenue guarantee, marketing, and fee waivers.
Individual communities and consortia of communities are eligible to participate in the Small Community Air Service Development Program. However, DOT may not select more than four communities or consortia of communities from the same state in the same year. The program is also limited to 40 communities or consortia of communities in the same year.
