Security Policy Alert: U.S. Tensions with Iran

January 3, 2020

TSA hosted a conference call this afternoon with AAAE and other aviation associations to discuss the developing situation between the U.S. and Iran and possible domestic impact at airports and mass transit facilities. TSA plans to post an unclassified assessment of the situation on HSIN as early as today.

In the meantime, TSA encouraged airports to increase their vigilance, highlighting the See Something, Say Something mantra. FSDs have been directed to work with airport operators to increase vigilance, increase presence in the public area and review AVSEC contingency plans should the National Terrorism Alert System (NTAS) be adjusted (specifically TSA NA 17-01). For its part, TSA is increasing ATLAS operations and its visible presence in public areas.

Airports should also be aware that Iran has known cyber attack capability and should increase cybersecurity vigilance as well.

Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf issued a statement on the situation earlier this afternoon, which included the following: "While there are currently no specific, credible threats against our homeland, DHS continues to monitor the situation and work with our Federal, State and local partners to ensure the safety of every American. As a result of yesterday's military action, I convened senior DHS leadership last night and earlier this morning to assess potential new threats and component actions to respond to the constantly evolving threat landscape. The entire Department remains vigilant and stands ready, as always, to defend the Homeland."

As always, AAAE will keep you informed as DHS and TSA consider potential additional measures. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
