Security Policy Alert: TSA Releases 2022 Summer Travel (Memorial Day) Security Operations Plan

TSA shared with AAAE their 2022 Summer Travel (Memorial Day) Security Operations Plan , commonly referred to as a 'placemat', which is focused on select high-volume airports. 

According to the placemat, TSA expects to screen 11.84 million passengers and crew from May 26 to May 31. This represents a checkpoint volume increase of approximately 10.5 percent compared to the same period in 2021. Projected Full Time Equivalents (FTE), not including overtime resources for this Memorial Day period, is 43,643 Transportation Security Officers. This is a 4.8% increase compared to the same time last year. TSA projects 396 Passenger Screening Canine Teams will be utilized over the Memorial Day period. TSA currently has a total of 838 National Deployment Officers deployed or scheduled to deploy across 72 airports. The totals on the placemat reflect only TSA's focus airports.

For the day-to-day projections for the Memorial Day weekend, TSA projects the highest volume on Friday, May 27 at 2,099,944 passengers and crew to be screened. Last weekend, on Friday, May 15, TSA already exceeded this number by screening 2,395, 894 million passengers and crew, the highest checkpoint volume since the Sunday after Thanksgiving 2021.
