Security Policy Alert: TSA Issues Updated FAQ on Face Mask SD

June 11, 2021

As anticipated, TSA has issued an updated Frequently Asked Questions document regarding the Security Directives implementing face mask requirements in and on airports and on aircraft. The updated FAQs reflect the guidance issued yesterday by the CDC that individuals outdoors at a transportation hub, such as an airport, do not need to wear a face mask. CDC continues to recommend face masks outdoors for individuals that have not yet been vaccinated.

In addition to Question 7, which addresses masks outdoors and is pasted below, TSA also added section headers to the document to group related questions and added a question and answer regarding masks for vaccinated individuals. AAAE continues to work closely with the CDC and the TSA to address face mask requirements for vaccinated individuals in non-public areas of the airport, specifically employer-controlled areas.

Question 7: Do I need to wear a mask if I am outside?

Answer:   Consistent with CDC guidance, TSA will not be enforcing the mask mandate in outdoor areas of conveyances (if such outdoor areas exist on the conveyance) or while outdoors at transportation hubs.  'œOutdoors' refers to any open-air area. While people are no longer required to wear a mask outdoors on conveyances or outdoors at transportation hubs, CDC continues to recommend people who are not fully vaccinated wear a mask in these areas to protect themselves and others.

Masks must still be worn on a plane, bus, train, or other form of public transportation traveling into, within, or out of the United States.

As a reminder, the Security Directive (SD 1542-21-01A) remains in effect until September 13, 2021.
