Security Policy Alert: Miklos Sworn In as TSA Deputy Administrator

August 25, 2020

Michael Miklos has been sworn in as the new Deputy Administrator for the Transportation Security Administration after being recently appointed to the position by the President. The TSA Modernization Act of 2018, which made the TSA Administrator a five-year term position, also designated the Deputy Administrator as a political position.

Miklos joins TSA after a 35-year career with the U.S. Army, and most recently as the Director for Strategic Projects at Janssen Pharmaceuticals, where he led teams on strategic projects to accomplish the company's global cross-sector pharmaceutical and consumer initiatives.

His Army career included service as the Defense Coordinating Officer for FEMA Region II, where he worked with federal and state emergency planners to provide defense support to civil authorities. While he served in this position, Hurricanes Ernesto, Isaac and Sandy struck. Mike coordinated the many requests for federal military support and provided initial command and control for all responding members of the U.S. military in New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

He also previously served as the Director of Strategic Communications for U.S. Forces in Iraq, where he managed all strategic communications, public affairs, and political and economic outreach as the United States transitioned security operations to the Iraqi government. Prior to that position, as commander of the 72d Field Artillery Brigade, he led training and operations for over 26,000 soldiers as they prepared for security and transportation missions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Miklos replaces Patty Cogswell who served as the Acting TSA Deputy Administrator since 2018 and retired on July 30, 2020, after nearly 24 years of federal service.
