Regulatory Alert: President-Elect Trump to Nominate Lee Zeldin as EPA Administrator
November 11, 2024
This afternoon, President-elect Donald Trump announced that he intends to nominate Lee Zeldin to become Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), according to Politico and other news reports. Zeldin is a former New York congressman who served between 2015 and 2023 and unsuccessfully ran for governor of New York in 2022. Prior to 2015, Zeldin served in the New York State Senate and had a law practice in New York.
If confirmed by the Senate, Zeldin is expected to implement environmental and energy policy on behalf of President-elect Trump in a significantly different direction than the current administration. In the announcement today, Trump indicated that Zeldin “will ensure fair and swift deregulatory decisions that will be enacted in a way to unleash the power of American businesses, while at the same time maintaining the highest environmental standards.”
AAAE is carefully watching the transition to determine how some of the personnel decisions for the new administration may impact the future of EPA’s PFAS policy, among other things. Earlier this year, EPA finalized two major rules on PFAS, one on drinking water standards and another designating PFOA and PFOS as hazardous substances under the Superfund law. Both are currently being challenged in court. The new EPA administrator will have an opportunity to weigh in on the future of these rules and others.
