Regulatory Alert: AAAE Solicits Feedback on FAA's UAS Remote ID Proposal
January 27, 2020
AAAE is distributing a survey to members to solicit feedback on the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) highly anticipated proposed rule that would require all unmanned aircraft systems (UAS), with limited exceptions, to be equipped with remote identification (ID) technology. As outlined in our December 26 Regulatory Alert, FAA recently published a notice of proposed rulemaking (NPRM) that outlines a framework and roadmap for implementing remote ID requirements. The current deadline for submitting comments to the agency is March 2, 2020. Over 7,300 comments have already been submitted.
You can find AAAE's remote ID survey here. We highly encourage you to provide input before February 10, 2020, as it will help us appropriately respond to this important rulemaking.
Background. For several years, AAAE and the airport community have urged FAA to expedite its publication of a proposed rule that outlines a framework on how the agency intends to deploy and implement industry-wide remote ID requirements. Remote ID is expected to improve the safety and security of airport operations by removing drone user anonymity and making it easier for law enforcement and FAA to find drone operators. Under the proposal released in December, FAA would impose new mandates on UAS owners, operators, and manufacturers to ensure that FAA, law enforcement, and the general public had access to data on the identity and location of each operator and unmanned aircraft flying in the national airspace. FAA is proposing to have the entire framework implemented within three years from the date of the final rule.
Resources on Proposed Rule. AAAE has prepared and compiled resources to help educate and familiarize members with the details of the proposed rule. AAAE recently held a webinar discussion and made available for review the recording and presentation slides. AAAE has also prepared an information brief summarizing key provisions from the proposed rule. You can access these documents and more at the following links:
