Regulatory Alert: DOT Announces Over $1 Billion in AIP Grants at 439 Airports

April 30, 2020

Today Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao announced the award of $1.187 billion in airport infrastructure grants, including $731 million in Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants and an additional $455 million in supplemental discretionary grants. The grants announced today will fund projects at 439 airports in 50 states. The money will also be available for 100 percent of the eligible costs as required under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

"This Federal investment of over $1 billion represents the Department's continued commitment to the safety and efficiency of our nation's airports for the traveling public," Secretary Chao said.

The $731 million in AIP grants that Secretary Chao announced today were made available by the $3.35 billion in "regular" AIP funding that Congress provided late last year as part of the FY 2020 appropriations package. Today's announcement also includes an additional $455 million in supplemental discretionary grants. The CARES Act included an additional $500 million to increase the federal share to 100 percent for FY 2020 AIP and FY 2020 supplemental discretionary grants.
