DOT Extends Deadline to Provide Feedback on Development of AAM National Strategy

June 30, 2023

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) extended the deadline for airports and other stakeholders to respond to the department's request for information (RFI) on the development of a national strategy for advanced air mobility (AAM). A newly formed AAM Interagency Working Group (AAM IWG) within DOT has been tasked with development of the strategy by 2024 pursuant to the Advanced Air Mobility Coordination and Leadership Act that President Biden signed into law last year. The new deadline to respond is Wednesday, August 16, which is a 30-day extension from the original July 17 deadline.

As outlined in our May 16 Regulatory Alert, DOT issued an RFI that asked stakeholders for feedback on what the AAM IWG should address in the national strategy, barriers to success for AAM integration, and what steps the federal government needs to take to ensure successful implementation in the United States. The strategy must include recommendations for federal investment and actions to support the growth of AAM and a comprehensive plan detailing the roles and responsibilities of each federal agency to facilitate or implement the recommendations.

As a reminder, AAAE is distributing a survey to members to solicit and collect feedback to help us respond to DOT's RFI. You can find AAAE's survey here. We have now extended the deadline to Tuesday, July 25, for members to provide us with feedback. We encourage you to share the survey with your staff that may be working on AAM-specific initiatives or have information pertaining to how AAM operations may be integrated into the airport environment. Survey results will help us better communicate our members' needs and concerns through our RFI response and when we meet with the AAM IWG in late July to share airport-specific perspectives.

AAAE will be hosting a virtual discussion with our members on Friday, July 7, at 1-2 p.m. ET, to discuss DOT's RFI on the AAM national strategy, collect additional feedback from members, and share preliminary thoughts on a response to the 20 topic and issue areas raised in the RFI. If you would like to participate in the discussion, please email Jeremy Valcich at Jeremy.Valcich@aaae.org to receive an invite.
