FAA Releases $267.7 Million in FY22 Supplemental Discretionary Grants
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released a list of over $267 million in fiscal year 2022 (FY22) supplemental discretionary grants, which will be awarded to 60 airports for 79 different projects. The grants released today will fund a very wide range of projects, including reconstructing and rehabilitating runways and taxiways; conducting energy efficiency assessments; procuring electric buses, eGSE chargers, zero emission vehicles, and snow removal equipment; installing solar panels; and developing airport sustainability and resiliency master plans, among many others.
The supplemental discretionary grants released today were made available by Congress in March 2022 through the FY22 omnibus appropriations bill. In the spending bill, Congress provided about $547.9 million for discretionary grants. Of that amount, $279.2 million was committed to specific projects at specific airports in the form of Community Project Funding/Congressionally Directed Spending, often referred to as earmarks. This left about $268.7 million available for FAA to award through supplemental discretionary grants. Today's selections were based on applications that airports submitted in response to a notice of funding opportunity (NOFO) that was released in December 2022.
FAA has not issued a formal press release or announcement of the FY22 supplemental discretionary grants. However, you can review the full list of grant awards released today here.
What's Next? In the FY23 omnibus appropriations bill, which passed in December 2022, Congress provided $558.6 million in supplemental discretionary funding, including $283.6 million for earmarks and another approximately $272.2 million for discretionary grants. We expect FAA to release a NOFO later this year that will outline how airports can apply for a share of these FY23 supplemental discretionary grants. We will keep members apprised as soon as that NOFO is released.
