Regulatory Alert: DOT Announces Over $1.2 Billion in AIP Grants for Projects at 405 Airports
September 1, 2020
Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao today announced the award of over $1.2 billion in airport infra-structure grants, including over $1 billion in Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grants and an addi-tional $152 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act grants to provide for the 100 percent federal share. The grants announced today will fund projects at 405 airports in 50 states and 6 territories.
"This $1.2 billion federal investment will improve our nation's airport infrastructure, enhance safety, and strengthen growth in local communities, which is especially important as the economy recovers from COVID-19," Secretary Chao said.
The more than $1 billion in AIP grants that Secretary Chao announced today were made available by the $3.35 billion in "regular" AIP funding that Congress provided late last year as part of the FY 2020 appropriations package. The U.S. Department of Transportation previously announced over $2.07 bil-lion in FY 2020 AIP grants in separate announcements on February 19, April 30, June 30, and July 28.
Today's announcement also includes an additional $152 million in grants made available by the CARES Act, which provided FAA with an additional $500 million to increase the federal share to 100 percent for FY 2020 AIP grants.
