Regulatory Alert: AAAE Solicits Feedback on FAA's Airport SMS Rulemaking Initiative

September 7, 2021

AAAE is distributing a survey to members to solicit feedback from the airport community on airport safety management systems (SMS) and the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) ongoing rulemaking initiative that would require certain Part 139 certificated airports to implement SMS. As reported in our August 23 Regulatory Alert, FAA recently reopened the comment period for airports and industry stakeholders to submit feedback on the original supplemental notice of proposed rulemaking (SNPRM) that was published in 2016. As emphasized in the notice, FAA is looking for any new information, data, or feedback that has come to light since the close of the comment period on the SNPRM.

AAAE understands that comments submitted in response to the 2016 SNPRM have already been adjudicated by the agency. Before moving forward with any final rule, FAA wants to determine if any new information has become available over the past five years. The deadline for AAAE, airports, and industry to provide new comments is Thursday, September 23.

You can find AAAE's airport SMS rulemaking survey here. All results will be held as confidential and will only be used for purposes of helping AAAE respond to FAA on this topic. We highly encourage you to provide input before Friday, September 17. Working with our members and partners at ACI-NA, AAAE plans to submit comments to the agency before the deadline and encourages airports to consider providing feedback as well.
