About the Course
This course is designed to train personnel who teach, evaluate, and document Airfield Driving & Ground Safety training while ensuring they have the technical knowledge, skills, and judgment to safely operate vehicles in movement and non-movement areas and coach others effectively.
This course has been developed to reduce runway incursions and ground incidents and accidents by strengthening standardized driving practices, acknowledging human factors, hazard recognition, and proper communications, including correct use of airport diagrams, signage, markings, lighting, vehicle limitations, and escort procedures.
This course also builds instructor capability in adult learning, facilitation, scenario-based delivery, performance evaluation, and accurate training recordkeeping aligned with airport procedures, FAA guidance, and SMS principles.

Participant Qualifications
Ideally, participants will have several years of airfield vehicle operations experience, are versed in their airport’s movement and non-movement area drivers’ training program and have experience providing training to others.

CANCELLATION POLICY: Training registration fees are non-refundable. A recording of the webinar will still be provided to cancelled registrations after the live webinar occurs for 30 days.
For all inquiries regarding registrations, cancellations and refund requests, please contact the AAAE Training Department by email at training@aaae.org. All inquires must be submitted in writing. All cancellation requests for registrations received on or before Thursday March 5, 2026, are subject to a $150 cancellation processing fee; approved refunds will be processed after the meeting takes place. There will be no refunds of any kind after this date. Cancellations with outstanding invoices received within two weeks of the start of the conference, will require full payment on the balance due. Refunds will not be provided, and balance dues will not be forgiven for no-shows. Substitutions within the same conference will be accepted without penalties. The difference between member and non-member price will be charged if a non-member replaces a member. Substitutions will be accepted with a written request to Training@aaae.org. The individual substituting for the original registrant is responsible for all financial obligations (balance due; difference in fees due to membership type) associated with that substitution. For all inquiries regarding cancellations, refunds and substitutions, please contact the AAAE Training Department at 703-824-0500 Option 4 or email Training@aaae.org. By submitting a completed registration form, you acknowledge that you have read and understand the cancellation policy.
NOTE: Confirmation letters will be emailed to attendees within one business day of registration. If you have not received an email confirmation of your registration within 1 day of registering, and you enrolled at least two hours prior to the online event, please contact the AAAE Training Department at training@aaae.org. Please note failure to receive a confirmation letter before an event will not be grounds for a refund.

Civilian/Military Airport Connection (CMAC)
What is CMAC?
The Civilian/Military Airport Connection (CMAC) program helps separating military personnel and new veterans acclimate from managing military airfields to the dynamic and complex commercial-use airport environment.
There are four components to the program:
- Professional transition workshop
- One airport certification course - choice of ACE Airfield Operations or Certified Member (C.M.)
- One year membership in AAAE
- Airport job shadowing

About the Instructor
John Ostrom
Trainer
John Ostrom concluded more than 37 years at Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport (MSP) in 2023, where he retired as the Assistant Director of Integrated Operations. In his leadership role with the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), he directed design and development of MSP’s Integrated Operations Center (North STAR Center) and managed the Airside Operations Department, ensuring compliance with 14 CFR Part 139 while advancing operational safety, efficiency, and collaboration. His career contributions included developing MSP’s award-winning Wildlife Hazard Management Program, pioneering the Airport Drivers’ Training Program, and leading the creation of the MSP Winter Operations Playbook, Tarmac Delay Contingency Plan, and Surface Movement Guidance Control System (SMGCS). He also established the Runway Incursion Review Board and advanced human factors and root cause analysis programs that influenced industry standards.
After leaving MSP in 2023, John began working with the American Association of Airport Executives (AAAE), where he has developed Part 139 training courses and continues to instruct in AAAE’s Basic and Advanced Airport Safety and Operations Specialist (ASOS) courses. He also created and delivered a month-long airport operations training program for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, helping to build technical skills and industry knowledge among new operations professionals.
John is a Certified Member of AAAE and has served as Chair of the Airport Training Committee, Chair of Bird Strike Committee USA (BSC USA), and Chair of the National Wildlife Services Advisory Committee (NWSAC). His expertise has contributed to FAA/ACRP research projects, national wildlife hazard management policy, and global safety practices. He is also a recognized aviation educator and speaker, having designed and instructed training courses for AAAE, Bird Strike Committee USA, and MSP’s Part 139 Boot Camp. John has also presented at ICAO/ACI symposia, AAAE conferences, Bird Strike North America, and before the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Transportation Infrastructure.
John holds an MBA in Management from the University of St. Thomas, a BA in Psychology with a minor in Mathematics from Winona State University, and pursued studies in Human Factors Engineering/Ergonomics at the U.S. Air Force Academy. His achievements have been recognized with awards including the FAA Sandy Wright/Richard Dolbeer Excellence in Strike Reporting Award, FAA Great Lakes Region Partnership Award, FAA Safety Team Aviation Safety Award, and a USDA Certificate of Appreciation.
