FAA Announces $636 Million in FY24 AIP Grants

August 9, 2024

Today, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced over $636 million in infrastructure grant awards as part of the fiscal year 2024 (FY24) Airport Improvement Program (AIP), including $474 million in entitlement grants and $162 million in discretionary grants. The 320 grants awarded today will fund a variety of projects in 46 states, including planning, airport safety improvements, airport development, and airport noise compatibility grants.

“From passenger travel to cargo operations, the Biden-Harris Administration continues to make our aviation system safer, more accessible, and more resilient through initiatives like the Airport Improvement Program,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg today.

The AIP grants announced by FAA were made available by the $3.35 billion in “regular” AIP funding that Congress provided in March 2024 as part of the FY24 DOT/FAA spending bill. Today’s announcement brings the total amount of FY24 AIP grants awarded to approximately $1.19 billion after FAA awarded about $374 million in AIP grants last month and about $180 million in June.

What’s Next? FAA is expected to continue to award FY24 AIP grants through September of this year. Airports should be aware of two other notable developments as it relates to other infrastructure funding programs:

•    FY23 Supplemental Discretionary Grants: FAA is expected to release within the coming months a list of projects that will receive a share of approximately $269 million in supplemental discretionary funds that Congress provided as part of the FY23 omnibus spending bill. We are expecting an announcement in August or September.

•    FY25 Airport Improvement Grants (AIG): FAA is expected to continue announcing AIG grant awards monthly throughout 2024, with allocations for airports for FY25 anticipated to be released in October or November of this year.

•    FY25 Airport Terminal Program (ATP) Grants: The application window for airports to apply for a share of $1 billion in FY25 ATP funding for terminal development projects closed at the end of last month. FAA has indicated that the agency expects to announce projects selected for FY25 ATP grants sometime in October or November of this year.
